EV Home Chargers Explained

Typically, when charging an electric car at home, slow charging is preferable. This way, the current will be converted from AC to DC by the car’s own converter.

Charging with a conventional domestic three pin plug allows for charging rates of 2.3kW. However, it can take time when you charge your car this way. For example, a 35kWh battery takes just under 16 hours to be fully recharged.

To reduce charging time, we highly recommend to install a dedicated home charger to charge at home.

info orangeInfo for our UK visitors: To enable 11-22kW charging, a household must have a three-phase electricity supply. However, most homes in the UK are only equipped with single-phase power, which is they can’t use three phase charging. You can apply for a three-phase upgrade through your grid operator, but this is very expensive, costing between £3,000 and £15,000.

The quickest chargers are usually located in public EV charging stations such as motorway services, car parks, or even a golf club. For EV owners specifically looking for a fast home charger, we recommend the Polaris Wallbox, a 22kW charger from our DC fast chargers product range.

Electric Vehicle Charger Installation Requirements

Requirements for electric vehicle charging point installation are usually simple. However, they may vary slightly in different European countries. However, some general requirements for an EV charging point installation always apply.

  • Own the property or have permission from landlord
  • Have your own off-street parking
  • Have a Wi Fi connection

info orangeINFO: Unless you are an electrician with experience in this area, we do not advise to install a car charger at home yourself. This may be more expensive in the short term, but is essential to ensure that your electric car charging point installation is done properly and safely and in compliance with all regulations. Also, most chargers void their warranty if not installed by an approved installer.

EV Home Charger Grant

Many governments incentivize electric mobiliy by offering grants, such as the OZEV grant in the UK. This can reduce the cost of an electric car home charger installation by up to 75%. Which kind of grant is available for an EV home charger installation depends on location and other conditions. Make sure you have all the information about relevant incentives in your area before your buy an electric car charging point.

Justwe logoAs a global provider of EV home charger solutions, our effort to minimize your cost goes beyond affordable prices. We minimize your EV charger installation cost by up to 75 % by taking care of application processes for eligible EV home charger grants.

If desired, we conduct an in-depth electric car charging pod comparison for you to determine which home EV charger best suits your needs and purposes.

How Long Does It Take to Install an EV Home Charger at Home?

When ordering from one of our distributors with a certified installation service, home installations typically take 8-10 working days following order confirmation.

The actual installation time itself varies from case to case, but the majority of installations takes about two hours. EV home charger installation times depend mainly on the customer’s spatial conditions and we heard of particularly unfavorable cases where the installation took a whole day.

  2. Find a service provider in your area to install electric chargers at home.
  3. Schedule an appointment for your electric charging station installation.
  4. Most EV charging installations are finished within 24 hours of the appointment.

How Long to Charge Car Battery?

A typical electric car (60 kWh battery) goes from empty to full in less than 8 hours with a 7 kW charging station. Most drivers prefer to charge only part of the battery rather than wait for their battery to go from empty to full.

For many electric cars, a 50-kW fast charger can add 100 miles in 35 minutes. The quickest chargers are usually to be found in public locations such as motorway services, car parks, or even a golf club.

Does an EV Home Charger Need an Earth Rod?

An earth rod is not required if the charging device meets the regulatory exceptions. This includes monitoring the operating voltage and disconnecting the vehicle from the power supply and ground in the event of a fault. Newer electric vehicle chargers have built-in systems to continuously monitor voltage conditions.

If the voltage exceeds a certain level, the charger will automatically shut down and disconnect from the electric vehicle and electricity supply. Realistically, not everyone who wants to have a charger at their home has a suitable place to put a ground rod.
