Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are photovoltaic materials that replace conventional building materials such as windows or facades. They are an important element in sustainable city building projects as a primary or secondary source of electrical power.

Solar Glass Technology
Solar glass technologies build upon the photovoltaic effect, which is caused by appropriate semiconducting materials upon sunlight exposure. Thus, a PV module generates clean energy by directly converting light into electrical power. For that reason, solar glass efficiency is measured by how much solar radiation enters the collector.
One of the most established approaches for producing solar panels are thin film materials. Thin film solar cells are produced by depositing one or more layers of thin film on a glass substrate.
Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) Thin Film is a crystalline compound from the telluride group formed from cadmium and tellurium with a (cubic) zincblende crystal structure (space group F43m (space group no. 216)). In its crystalline form, it is a direct II-VI bandgap semiconductor. Usually, it is used as a layered structure with cadmium sulfide to form a pn junction, e.g. for a solar cell or photodiode.
Industrial Applications
Despite the raw material being much more expensive than amorphous silicone, CdTe cells can be produced more cheaply. This is because the amount of CdTe required to achieve the same absorption as silicone is orders of magnitude smaller. CdTe forms as a solid solution with mercury telluride HgTe forms a versatile infrared detector material (Hg,Cd)Te.
Low production cost and achievable efficiency values of up to 22% make CdTe one of the most popular materials in the PV Industry. Globally, CdTe-based cells account for a market share of ~10 % of solar cell production.
3.2CdTe+0.5EVA+3.2C
A 3.2mm tempered CdTe film is the foremost layer in this structure. The glass is reinforced by an interlayer of Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) of 0.5mm thickness. As a result, the structure has a high durability by making it resistant to moisture.
The backside consists of clear tempered/toughened glass with a thickness of 3.2 mm. The tempering puts the outer surfaces into compression and the interior into tension.
If broken, iron tempered solar glass shatters into small granular chunks rather than jagged shards, making it less likely to cause injury to humans and animals.
5Li+1.52PVB+3.2CdTe+1.52PVB+5Li
Here, the thin film layer is sandwiched in a structure of five glass sheets in total; beginning with a 5mm lithium (Li) layer for each front and back. Lithium glass is a highly robust solid scintillator and extremely resistant to contamination.
A 1.52mm layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) on each side give this glass an extra level of safety and durability. PVB interlayers provide three beneficial properties to laminated solar glass panels, making them perform exceptionally well in more extreme environments:

6Li+1.52PVB+3.2CdTe+1.52PVB+6Low-E+12A+6Li
This structure consists of six glass layers and one hollow argon layer. At its core, it is the same as the five-layered one, but with extra thick lithium layers of 6mm each for maximum stability.
One additional layer of each 6mm Low-E (Low emmissivity) glass and one hollow argon layer make sure that high temperature differences won’t have as much of an impact on a room’s interior.
In other words, it is kept cool during summer and warm during winter. Therefore, this structure makes for a particularly environmentally friendly glass.
CdTe vs. Silicon-Based PV Production
As demonstrated by a life-cycle study by researchers at Australia’s Charles Darwin University, CdTe is the most sustainable PV technology. Compared to the most common silicon-based approaches, CdTe-based production comes out best in terms of human health, ecosystems and cost increases in resource extraction.

This is because its low transmittance naturally keeps the interior cooler. As a result, the cars air conditioner won’t have to be used as much.
